Varicose veins, also known as varicosities, occur when your veins become enlarged and dilated. They are often secondary to venous reflux of the saphenous veins in the leg. Varicose veins can be painful, tender to touch, and appear swollen or raised.
Swelling, also known as edema, can be present in the legs for many reasons. It may be related to veins that have become enlarged and begin leaking fluids. Chronic swelling can lead to weeping blisters that may rupture and advance to open wounds.
