5 Sclerotherapy Treatment Aftercare Tips

Sclerotherapy is a common, safe, and effective procedure for treating varicose and spider veins. During the procedure, saline solution is injected into the vein, causing it to seal shut. As the vein seals itself off, it will then heal and disappear.

The great thing about sclerotherapy is that it is a quick, non-invasive, and effective treatment. When you get sclerotherapy at Heart of Dixie Vein & Vascular Center, this outpatient procedure will return you to your life in no time.

However, there are still some ways you can make aftercare that much easier. Read this guide to learn more.

Tip 1: Expect Slight Discomfort/Bruising

Generally, the side effects of sclerotherapy are minimal. However, because it involves injecting a solution, you could end up with a bit of bruising. If you notice this, don’t worry. Any swelling or bruising will likely go down quickly. If you do have concerns, talk to one of our professionals.

Tip 2: Use Acetaminophen

While any pain after the procedure will likely be minimal, taking an over-the-counter medication can help you feel more comfortable.

Your best bet for a pain reliever is Tylenol or a generic brand of acetaminophen. Other pain relievers, such as Ibuprofen, have anti-inflammatory properties that may cause some minimal bleeding.

Tip 3: Wear Compression Stockings

In the week after sclerotherapy, be sure you wear compression stockings. Wearing these will help your veins heal. Ensure they are medical-grade, and ask our health care experts if you have questions about which kind of compression stockings to use.

Tip 4: Avoid Putting Lotion or Other Skin Products on the Area

For the first few days after the treatment, it’s best to avoid putting lotions, creams, or anything with fragrance on the injection site. An antibacterial ointment or lotion for sensitive skin may be okay and provide comfort. Still, it’s best to ask our team if the product is safe first.
